Atrium Designs
An Atrium, considered as one of the most popular spots in a commercial building or hotel, can vary in design. The designs depend largely on the over-all measurement and shape of the building. It is also up to the planner/engineer if he/she wants to cover the Atrium with vinyl or tempered glasses or to include brilliant flora and fauna landscaping, chairs, or a fountain in the given space.
The Atrium Designs we currently have at present evolved from the following types of Atrium during the Greek and Roman periods: Atrium Tuscanium, Atrium Tetrasylum, Atrium Corinthium, Atrium Displuviatum, and Atrium Testudinatum.
The Atrium Tuscanium design is considered as the most expensive type of Atrium yet, it has been regarded as the most widespread type of Atrium in Roman houses. The design doesn't have columns to support the weight of its ceiling construction. In this type of design, the ceiling is to be carried by rafters.
In the Atrium Tetrasylum design, each corner of the ‰?Ďimpluvium,‰?? the sunken part of an Atrium in Roman houses, has one column each. Atrium Corinthium is almost similar to the Atrium Tuscanium design, only that, it has a greater roof opening and greater number of columns.
The roof in Atrium Displuviatum slopes towards its sidewalls while, the roof in Atrium Testudinatum has no opening at all.
